A New Vision for Conservation
Posted on May 19, 2011
“A new way to conceive, portray and understand ‘Nature’ and ‘Conservation’”
This was the proposal put forward by Dr Joe Zammit-Lucia in his recent talk to scientists of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) at its Doñana Biological Station in Seville.
Speaking to a group of conservation biologists, ecologists and other environmental scientists, Dr Zammit-Lucia examined the current culture surrounding ‘Conservation’ and how that culture is reflected in attitudes, visual, spoken and written communication.
“We need to get back to a culture of conservation that is exciting and inspirational rather than one that tells everyone what bad people they are because of their wasteful lifestyle and the damage they wreak on nature” said Dr Zammit-Lucia. He concluded by laying out a five-point framework with a new vision for the relationship between human culture and our evolving concept of nature.
Following the session, Dr Zammit-Lucia has been invited back to discuss in more detail with scientists his suggested framework for the future.
